Hair Loss And Best Home Remedies

Hair Loss

Hair loss is a terrible problem and probably nobody wants to face it. It's true men are more likely to lose hair, specially after 40, than women. Beauty of a person greatly depends on natural hair and a can never replace it. Natural hair is an asset and losing it may become a nightmare.

Although there are ways to treat hair loss both for men and women but we must remember the most common proverb 'Prevention is Better than Cure'. Before discussing how to take care of this priceless asset, we must understand the basic causes of hair fall. Otherwise we can never escape 'hair loss'.

Reasons :

  • Physical or Mental Stress :

Any kind of 'physical trauma' such as serious illness, surgery, accident or 'mental trauma' like death or serious illness of a near and dear one, depression may lead to 'hair loss'. Hair has a specific life cycle - a growth phase, rest phase and a shedding phase. This normal life cycle of hair is disturbed because of illness or mental stress. The hopeful thing is that as soon as the illness is cured and mental trauma subsides, hair starts growing normally.

  • Ageing :

Ageing is a normal process in life that everybody has to undergo and accept. As body gradually gets older it becomes weaker and major hormonal changes take place and more quickly so in women after 'menopause'. During this period the body needs more care, more proteins/vitamins and hydration. If these deficiencies are not supplemented, it may lead to 'hair fall' or 'thinning of hair'.

  • Pregnancy

Pregnancy related hair loss is observed in many women and not uncommon. This specially happens after the birth of the infant. Giving birth to a child puts tremendous physical and mental pressure on a woman. A lot of hormonal changes take place during this period. This is not a very serious condition to worry about and never leads to a permanent baldness.

This type of hair loss usually starts reappearing after 3 to 4 months of delivery as hormones start coming back to normal levels gradually. Of course, unusual hair loss during pregnancy may also be ascribed to deficiency of vitamins and minerals and may be treated.

  • Anemia

The most common form of anemia occurs due to a deficiency of iron which is a vital mineral for hair. Iron also nourishes skin and keeps heart healthy and is responsible for overall fitness. Lower number of red blood cells(haemoglobin) causes deficiency of iron and leads to anemia. If daily diets lack iron rich foods one may suffer from anemia. Therefore, deficiency of iron has to be raised to normal level with iron rich food supplements.

  • Deficiency of Vitamin B

It has been observed by researchers though relatively small but deficiency of vitamin B can cause baldness. Like anemia the treatment should centre around supplementation of vitamin B with diet rich in vitamin B e.g. vegetables/fish/meat and non-citrus fruits.

  • Deficiency of Protein

Lack of protein in body results in hair fall also. Meat, fish, egg are excellent sources of proteins. In case of vegetarian persons lot of proteins are available in fruits and vegetables. The chart below shows protein contents in vegetables, fruits and non-veg products :

  • Male/Female Typical Baldness

This type of male baldness is natural and occurs due to change in male sex hormones and genes most commonly witnessed by persons between the age group of 40 to 60 years. The hormones and genes follow a classic routine whereby hair starts becoming thin at the temples leaving an 'M-Shape' hairline as below :

Another Most Common Type of Male Baldness :

The female version of  pattern baldness is called 'Androgenic Alopecia'. Unlike men women tend to have a widened baldness apparently visible rather than a 'M-Shaped' hairline.

Typical Female Baldness :

  • Prevention

There are some external lotions such as 'Minoxidil(Rogaine) and tablets such as Finasteride(Propecia) that are capable of preventing or delaying these types of 'pattern baldness'. The latest solution is 'transplant or grafting' of hair.
